Just a brief update

Just ignore the fact I said I'd finish my posts on post-production soon. I will, just alter the definition of "soon".

Just a brief update for those reading.

We're still making the festival run. As soon as we've received good news we'll let everyone know, you can be sure of this. ;)

We've also been meeting with people about the movie's future and so far it's been pretty positive. When anything along these lines is finalized of course we'll let you know about this too.

The Grover Complex website should be up by this weekend. I'm slowly chipping away at it.

A delayed post on post-production

I almost never got to this post... which is probably pretty symbolic considering a lot of indie filmmakers don't reach their post production point.

Okay, so, post.

Not too long after principle photography we were contacted by a former teacher who advised us to speak to someone about our RED footage. He introduced us to Bobby Maruvada who does color correction, transfers, you name it, over in Santa Monica. Bobby attempted to step us through the challenges of RED footage. I still don't think I remember most of it, but luckily he's a great guy and will repeat it upon request.

While we had planned for the costs of post you can never really plan for the costs of post. Editing, onlining, color correction, transfers, la di da, you get it. There's a lot and by this stage you're just a little burned out from pre-production and actual production. KEEP GOING.

Bobby guided us towards his friend and editor Michael Darrow. We love Mike Darrow. After the first meeting it was pretty clear Mike was our guy. Our crew kicked ass but in our fast 15 day shoot we did miss coverage here or there (but rarely did we have any continuity problems thanks to our awesome script supervisor Elena!). Mike never seemed to freak out over an absence of a shot, he simply got clever and worked around it. It took Mike just around 6 weeks to give us our final cut. We did several tiny and private work-in-progress screenings to get some opinions of people not deeply connected to the movie.

You need to test your movie on people before you call it finished. Just because you've filled in various holes in the plot (not that we had any) doesn't mean the rest of the world has your creative imagination. It's arrogant not to allow others to voice their opinions. Don't be a prick.

We were told not to hesitate at this stage of the game. Waiting around, re-thinking things, would bring about some sort of potentially fatal, expensive loss of momentum. By this time we've seen the film maybe over 60 times. Are we sick of it...

Eh. Not too much. ;)

But regardless of whether or not we felt we could deal with hearing Fernando yell out "It's not small!" we soldiered on.

Our crew may be small but we are not.

We had our cast and crew screening this past Sunday at Cinespace. It was wonderful for everyone who worked so hard on this feature to get a chance to enjoy it on the big screen!

In the next few weeks we should begin hearing back from our first group of festivals we submitted to. Here is hoping. :)

15 days. 15 days. 15 days.

So I think I've stated over and over again we started in the middle of October 2008.

The first day of shooting was in Lomita, CA. It involved Grover's apartment and the various tragedies that took place there. The Bambi dinner, the stripper visit, so at this stage the family room of the rented home was still painted white and stacked high with cardboard boxes.

We had a good first day, a little light on craft services… a little understaffed. Eh, but what'd you expect? :)

We were shooting over six pages per day in order to get done on time. Can I have a big 'Thank you' for caffeine and sugar? I love them, may they never be restricted by the FDA.

The majority of the shoot was in the Lomita house. One of our next spots though was a park in Torrance. Originally we thought that this park was in Lomita… which would have been great considering Lomita's permit prices. Torrance is a bit more pricey BUT I found they seemed a bit less eager to assign police to the shoots. Lomita wanted to assign a police officer when we wanted to shoot out doors. The cost of hiring the officer makes that location equal in cost to Torrance's actual permit cost. Anyway, the point I was rambling to was it's probably wise to get a city map (duh, Claire) and make sure certain areas are actually where you think they are. This saves time and embarrassment when you go down to the permit office and request a location they have no control over. The map is also helpful for when you request hidden areas of the city. A few locations we found in Torrance were right on the Lomita/Torrance border and the permit office had to be shown the spot we were talking about. It made me feel very smart to show them a section of their city they didn't know was in their jurisdiction.

Right away we were dealing with the stress of being understaffed. Don't skimp on Production Assistants, it costs you more to not have enough people. We could have used about three more people on set. The Grover Complex was such an art heavy film we definitely needed more people in the Art Department. As it turned out Raisa Miranda and Elizabeth Garner somehow managed to get everything done. They stayed many extra nights though and during the shooting days worked their asses off along with Brad Harris and Matthew Horan.

During production they had to repaint Grover's apartment and turn it into Bambi's house. They also had to finish Ricky's complicated room that involved a cowboy mural and various tributes to Ricky himself. There were no real days off for Art Department. Not that there were many days off for anyone else…

There was one particular day that stands out in shooting… on this day we were shooting in that park in Torrance. Fernando had to swap his car for the convertible that Grover drove during the film. There was absolute chaos in the morning resulting from discovering we needed an extra $30,000 to avoid shut down and during this we didn't pick up the car and did not pick up an actress. These two omissions were eventually solved but not before Fernando had to act in a scene where Grover was excited to be making his movie.

Talk about putting up major blinders to the outside world to get through the day…

The Production Design of The Grover Complex

Amazing work was done by our Production Designer Raisa Miranda, Art Director Elizabeth Garner, and Production Assistants Matthew Horan and Brad Harris for The Grover Complex. Karen Bullis wanted the sets of Grover to be rich in texture and in color.

Raisa and Elizabeth had the job of turning our rented three bedroom house into a set for every interior except the classroom and diner scenes.

Getting our toes wet...

Here is where the abuse of creating a movie truly becomes both psychological and physical.

Principle photography began in the middle of October 2008. A few weekends before “officially” beginning we shot Grover’s student films on the Panasonic AG-HVX200 camera. This cut our page count during principle down from 92 pages to about 86. Yes, huge chunk there. ;) But it did help.

The crew for our “student film shoot” was simply Karen Bullis, Shweta Chanda (www.shwetachanda.com), Elizabeth Garner, Raisa Miranda, and Claire L. Wasmund. We shot these using reflector boards and a work-light purchased from Home Depot (very classy). The most elaborate bits of this mini-shoot were the fun costumes and props created for Grover, Ron, Lorenzo, and Ricky’s films: 70’s wigs, a severed head, samurai sword, a futuristic soldier get-up with a large cod-piece, and plenty of donuts.

Besides our NYFA crew there were many other people who made this movie possible.

With the lightning fast filming schedule “good-natured” was a key requirement in being hired for Grover. Our Gaffer, Joel Tacorda, and Art Director, Elizabeth Garner, seemed perpetually cheerful and talented. (That helps).

Electrician Ed Joyce and Igor Tochilnikov (www.igortoch.com), Key Grip, had worked with Karen and Shweta before. Along with grip Ian Thomas we seemed to have a G/E crew of humanoid Energizer Battery Bunnies who worked hard and stayed agreeable for their entire 12 hour shifts.

Assisting Shweta in the camera department we had Kyle Kimbriel as First Assistant Camera, Jay I. Patel and Adilla Amelia as Second Assistant Camera and our great Red guy Dan Blanchett who rented us the Red and filled in as needed. He also took all the great pictures you see up.

Davin Pressnall and Brandon Huus were our sound department. We had two fabulous Production assistants, Brad Harris and Matthew Horan.

Elena Antzon was our wonderful script supervisor who kept her eye on any little mishaps that might befall us as we tried to keep on schedule. Natalie Vermiglio provided the beautification for our lovely actors.

They're all super-humans, obviously.

Casting

Ah, casting.

We pretty much found the entire Grover Complex cast off of Nowcasting.com in a two month period. Jesse Aguilera: Fabio, Matthew Moy: Ron, Read MacGuirtose: Wilkins, were all snatched up fast. They were followed by Annette Remter: Shelby (Mom), and Victor Kelso (www.victorkelso.synthasite.com): Lorenzo. We finally got our Bambi, Heather Tocquigny, three weeks before production began.

Tristan Scott, who plays Ricky, has been a frequent player in a few of our other projects, one, Delayed Teen Angst, that Amy Vorpahl (www.amyvorpahl.com), who plays Sapphire, also appears in. Fanie Garcia (Megan) and Laura Pluemer (Gertrude) both attended The New York Film Academy with Fernando so he knew they could be counted on in their roles. Juan Vandendorp, Mr. Flavorful, came at the recommendation of Read MacGuirtose. Playing the voice of Grover's father we got talented voice-over actor Tony Azzolino.

I think much of the reason we made our shooting schedule was that we did rehearsals with the actors before production began. There was no time taken to explain motivation on set, there were no lost takes as actors were still getting to know each other.

Every one of our actors is a person we would recommend you hire and have on set.

Fun notes from pre-production

So we decided to post some fun notes from pre-production, things that might help other indie filmmakers or might make more established filmmakers smile or things that might help my mother understand what all goes into this.

The Grover Complex was first brought into the September 2006 one year screenwriting program by Fernando Noor under the title Grover's Wang. It stayed under this title until about June of 2008 when we realized Grover's Wang didn't really give itself a chance to be taken seriously.

Pre-production for The Grover Complex began around June of 2008... so we've been at this a year. For those who don't know this is a pretty reasonable/good pace for an indie feature length film. Sometimes they linger for years in limbo brought about by no funds.

Our crew came heavily from The New York Film Academy in Los Angeles. Fernando Noor as screenwriter, lead actor, and executive producer; Karen Bullis as Director; Claire L. Wasmund as producer; Leigh E. Carlson as co-producer; Shweta Chanda as Director of Photography; Raisa Miranda as Production Designer; and Manav Wadhwa as 1st Assistant Director. For such a frenzied shooting schedule we wanted a group that had a lot of experience working together.

The thought originally was to shoot in August of 2008. We delayed this until October of 2008 when it became clear we needed to rethink some script locations to accommodate our planned shooting schedule of around 15 days. The script that we planned to shoot in August had 20 plus locations, one being a drive-through. 20 plus locations in 15 days... eh... :( We went through the difficult process of cutting all of these locations down.

In the end we decided the best strategy would be to try and shoot all interiors in one location whether by building sets in a warehouse or finding a house suitable to dress and use for the shoot. Claire Wasmund called around to all sorts of film houses and got back the very nasty quotes of $10,000 to $20,000 PER WEEK. Okay, we mentioned the 15 DAY shooting schedule, yes? If we had a larger crew we could have had someone run around checking the local rent signs that dot the front yards of our housing crisis city but we didn't have a larger crew. So Claire signed up for Westsiderentals.com and called every single "month-t0-month" lease listed until she finally found a fabulous three bedroom home in Lomita, CA for less than half of the $10,000 per week cost for TWO MONTHS.

The two months in the house gave our Art Department, Production Designer Raisa Miranda time to paint and gather props and furniture. It also gave our Director Karen Bullis and DP Shweta Chanda time to plan out their shots in the house.

Lomita is a really nice city to shoot in. The film permit office at City Hall was staffed with pleasant people. People who didn't rip our heads off when we came into grab a permit at the last minute. Please, don't do that to them. Oh, you can't beat the film permit costs either, after the initial fees you pay an $83/day business licence to shoot.

So we were busy. Cut us some slack, we're indie here, we can't hire someone to do this for us. It takes one of those moments of us going, "Oh yeah, we have a GROVER blog". We are cast. Yes. This time I'm being honest.

Here's what's been up:

We have our house for filming and this past weekend we've painted, moved furniture, bought props, driven u-hauls, and all those other great things that come with getting a "place to live" ready. Set dressing is rather important.

Crew is nearly set... we need to get it set.

We're shooting on the Red. To some of you that won't mean anything. Those who know probably won't care either. ;p

The crew and cast have worked insanely hard and we're proud of them.

So we shot our independent feature The Grover Complex in 15 days. Let me just explain for those who don't know and insult those who do that this is an incredibly fast pace for a 90 page script. We went up to 7 pages a day (big movies will do 2-3 pages a day). Thank you to Manav Wadhwa, our first AD, for keeping us on task. Thanks too to Karen Bullis our director, Shweta Chanda our Director of Photography, and Joel Tacorda our cheerful gaffer.

The movie looks gorgeous. Thanks to our Production Designer Raisa Miranda and Art Director Elizabeth Garner, along with their assistant Matthew Horan, the set was this colorful and sophisticated backdrop that is really going to help this movie shine. A long needed update

So maybe we dropped the ball a bit on keeping this updated... Just a bit....

We're now in post production on The Grover Complex. This means we shot it already. However, I mean to correct the tragedy of any reader left out of the process!

I will be updating constantly to atone!

As we near our shooting dates and crunch time for THE GROVER COMPLEX we've been so thrilled to encounter a lot of enthusiasm and questions for and about the film.

Things are a tad bit on the hectic side and occasionally phone calls and emails feel a bit daunting. We're not ignoring most of you... you just have nothing to do with film permits or rehearsals or even craft services.

The thought was if we posted a general blog about the film we could keep you all up to date without dialing and with minimal typing.

Synopsis

This is the story of GROVER. A kid that thinks his penis is too small. This trauma came to be from a very painful incident that happened to him when he was sixteen. He was giving the girl he loves, Bambi, a ride home after a party and she was drunk. She stuck her hand inside his pants, grimaced and signaled to her friend in the back seat “small”. The girls pointed and laughed.

Grover is now eighteen and the memory still haunts him. His only goal in life is to prove to Bambi that his dick is not small but he has not seen her in two years.

Grover struggles at home with his family, and with school. Small penis thinking has completely shattered his confidence. He needs to find a way to show Bambi that he is the man she needs, and regain his confidence.
